The Benefits of Citizen Volunteers and How They are helping to save lives in the initial stages of natural disasters.

What Natural Disaster doesn’t have a devastating impact on communities, leaving them in need of critical aid throughout the onslaught of the devastation and recovery phases? Usually, in the initial evacuation, search and rescue stages of disaster relief operations, where there are systemic shortages of key personnel and the cash to support them until larger government agencies can mobilize from away. To ensure that they meet these basic needs, it is essential to have a “whole community” response plan to help provide critical aid through disaster relief operations from the very start.

Citizen volunteers play an important role in the early rescue and response effort early on. Helping to shore up limited disaster relief operations as needed. This is especially true when early-stage search & rescue resources are often inadequate or non-existent. By providing certain skills, equipment and labour, when the community’s normal organizational structure can or is not. This is when organized citizen volunteers standing by can help deliver, as called upon, life-sustaining aid, such as food, water, shelter, medical supplies and more. The missing piece typically is the availability of able human-powered reserves to support otherwise limited resources to sustain life.
